Obituary for Francis Quick

Jim, as he was known most of his life, was born in Gibson, NC to Sallie Mae Jacobs Quick and Marvin Quick. He was the youngest of eight children. When he was 12 years old his mother passed away and Jim went to live with the Chandler family in Greenville, SC. He remained in their care until he joined the United States Navy at the age of 17. He traveled the world while proudly serving his country until he settled in Pensacola, Florida where he managed the Pensacola Naval Air Station Exchange. Jim retired from the military in Pensacola, Florida in 1975. He had always had a love of big trucks and quickly went to work for Lewis-Bear, a local trucking company. He “ran the roads” for a number of years until heart by-pass surgery grounded him and he transferred to dispatching. Jim retired from there with 20 years of service and numerous awards.
Jim was a loving husband and father. He married Shirley Ruth Cheek Quick and in 1960, at 22, became the proud father of Leadonna Ann Quick Kimmel. Shirley passed away July 4, 1965 while 7 months pregnant, both she and the baby were lost. In 1972, Jim married Doris Herzog. Doris had a son, Richard Lee Costello when they married and together had Ashley Marie Quick Maacks on September 4, 1979.
Jim loved to bowl, shoot pool and play card and board games. He played a killer game of Scrabble and nothing pleased him more than winning! He enjoyed completing puzzles of any sort and collecting numerous odds and ends from coins, beer steins, and NASCAR items to Coke and Budweiser collectibles.
He was a loving and generous spirit, the type of gentleman that would truly give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He was a very private man and didn’t reveal much of himself but the twinkle in his eye and devilish grin spoke volumes!
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Sallie Mae Jacobs Quick, his father, Marvin Quick, sister, Edna Earl Quick, brother, Jack Tyson Quick, brother Robert Eugene Quick and sister, Sara Helen Quick Jeswald. Survivors are his brother, Marvin Clinton Quick, brother, Arthur Prentiss Quick, sister Thera Mae Quick Ennis, step-son, Richard Lee Costello and his wife Kathe, Leadonna Ann Quick Kimmel and her fiancé, Danny Fritts, Ashley Marie Quick Maacks and her husband, Michael. The surviving grandchildren are Christopher Costello, Amberly Costello Porto, Jessica Carlton, Rachel Carlton Jones, Sarah Kimmel, Michael (Joey) Kimmel, Erin Fritts and Daniel Fritts. He was also the proud great-grandfather of Emmaline Grace Jones.
