Doris Faye Jones Patrick, 89, of Jay, Florida, passed away Thursday morning, February 1, 2018.
Doris was born to William Rufus and Annie Mae Lloyd Jones in Jay, Florida, on January 4, 1929. The second of six children, Doris graduated from Jay High School at the age of 16. She then attended Florida State College for Women, graduating from Florida State University with a Bachelor’s of Arts in 1948, and a Master of Arts in 1949, at the age of 19. Doris remains the youngest student to attain a Master’s Degree at Florida State University. Doris married Bill Patrick in May of 1954, and moved to Meriwether County, Georgia, where she taught for four years. She then moved back to Jay, Florida, where she was instrumental in establishing libraries at the Jay, Chumuckla, and Munson schools. Doris continued her career as the Jay High School Librarian from 1948 to 1993. She finished her career as an Adult School Educator, completing 52 years of educational service. She was a long-time member of both the Florida Education Association and the Jay Order of the Eastern Star. Doris took tremendous pride in assisting her students toward completing their education. She was a cherished member of her community. “Darcy” adored and doted on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her kindness and gentle touch will always be remembered. To know her, truly was to love her.
Doris was preceded in death by her son, Jay Michael Patrick in 2016; her parents, William Rufus and Annie Mae Lloyd Jones; and sisters, Naomi Durham and Ruth Weekes.
Doris is survived by her husband of 63 years, William Z. Patrick, “Bill”; two loving sons, William E. Patrick, Jr. (Darenda), and Mark Jones Patrick (Kim); daughter-in-law Theresa Patrick; grandchildren, Sheena Locklin (Oscar), Megan Lewis (Joshua), John Mark Patrick, William E. Patrick, III, Matthew Ryan Patrick, Courtney Creel, and Colton Creel; nine great-grandchildren; siblings, Wyouida “Jane” Patterson of Jacksonville, Florida, Wilda Pace of Jacksonville, Florida, and Wyman Jones of Milton, Florida; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pallbearers: John Mark Patrick, William E. Patrick, III, Matthew Ryan Patrick, Jack Weekes, Rick Weekes, Oscar Locklin, and Joshua Lewis.
Honorary Pallbearers: Elton Nowling, Obie Nevels, Joe Jones, Jerry Jones, Jimmy Jones, Arthur Patnaude, Bert Settles, Clarence Smith, Dr. C. David Smith, Frank Green, Adone Lloyd, Tommy Henry, Hayward Prescott, and Jeff Weekes.
Services will be held at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church in Jay, Florida, on Monday, February 5, 2018. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m., funeral services at 1:00 p.m. with interment to follow in the Mount Carmel United Methodist Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank Dr. C. David Smith and staff for their outstanding personal care and attention during Doris’s final years and the staff of Jay Hospital during her final weeks.
