Obituary for Elbert Bartholomew "Daddy Bert" Miller

Elbert Bartholomew "Daddy Bert" Miller
2 Timothy 4:7 fought the good Fight, He finished his course, and He kept the faith:
Bert was born May 14, 1927 to John Franklin Miller and Ada (Greer) Miller. He passed from this life into Glory to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 6, 2018.
Bert started work at the age of 8 as a shoe shine boy and even paid social security from then on. He worked at a shoe repair shop and then learned to repair shoes and became a specialist in making orthopedic shoes and ballet shoes. He then bought a shoe repair shop and worked there for about a year, then sold it and went to RC Cola and had a delivery route. He had missed WWII because the day he got his draft notice, he had just gotten his foot out of a cast. So when reported, they deferred him for 90 days and the war was over so he did not have to go.
He gave his heart and soul to the Lord when about 15 years old and led the rest of the family back to church and the Lord at Park Place Baptist Church in Pensacola, FL. He became the Minister of Music there. He used to preach on the radio on Saturdays for a while. He served the Lord in all areas the church had need of him.
He enlisted in the Army in December 1948 and after basic went to Japan. He loved being in Japan and the Japanese people. He made the rank of Sgt. while there. He had orders to come home in July of 1950 but Korea broke out in June of 1950 so his whole unit, the 24th Infantry Division, was transferred to South Korea , since they were stationed in Japan only 15 miles from South Korea. He was awarded the Occ Medal (Japan), The Press Unit Citation (ROK), the Korean Service Medal W/5 Bronze stars as well as the Bronze Star Medal. In December 1951, he came back to the USA and went to Fort Knox and was honorably discharged in July 1952.
He came home to Pensacola in July of 1952 and went back to RC Cola then went to work at St. Regis bag plant. He realized that was not for him and got hired on Civil Service at NAS Pensacola main side in October, 1952 and worked there 36 years till his retirement December 1988.
On his last day at St. Regis, a friend introduced him to this lady she thought he might like and her name was Pat Miller and she stole his heart and was his precious first love of his life. They married in December 1953. They had a long and happy marriage of 35 years till her death in January 1989.
When Pat died, he never dreamed of marriage or love again, but God had other plans and brought his second and final Love of his life into his life, Deborah Miller. They shared 27 blessed years of marriage. He must have been a little crazy to want to marry a young woman with a 12 year old boy and 16 year old boy, but he did and it was the best thing for them and most of all her. He took on the job of raising and being the best Dad to her boys they could have ever wanted. He was her heart and love of her Life.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; sisters and brothers; daughter, Beverley Odom; and his first wife, Amelda “Pat” Miller.
He leaves behind: his 2nd wife, Deborah Miller; his sons, Terry (Martha) Miller, Julian (Christal) Martin, and Travis Martin; daughter-in-law, Sandra Martin; grandchildren, Jeff (Kellie) Odom, Bryant (Dana) Odom, Jessica (Brett) Grindstaff, Allison (Josh) Brooks, Ashley (Coley) Land, Shelby Catanzarita, Michael Leija, Jessica Catanzarita, Chrissy Catanzarita, Tyler Martin, Veronica Martin, Taylor Martin, and J.D. Martin IV; eight great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
His pall bearers will be Josh Brooks, Mark Richards, Will Chavers, Larry Locklar, Anthony Bailey, and Danny Bateman.
A very special thank you to Emerald Coast Hospice especially Nurse Olga and home aide Courtney. You have been a great blessing to Bert and me during this time. Another special thank you to Council on Aging, Mrs. Cook we could not have made it without you during this past 8 months.
