A Navy Veteran, Alton Dwite Tharp passed away Friday, March 16, 2018 in San Antonio, TX.
Al was a brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend to many.
He was born in Waynesboro, TN on February 18, 1932 to Joseph and Mary Tharp.
He enlisted in the U. S. Navy on March 7, 1951 and served his country for 22 years, retiring as a Cryptologic Technician Chief Senior. In his service he earned the Good Conduct Medal with 5 Stars, the National Defense Service with gold star, and the Navy Unit Commendation.
Al is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Patricia Verlene Tharp and his eldest son, Terry Alton Tharp.
He is survived by his two sons, Thomas Alvin (Debbie) Tharp, Tracy Allen (Bonnie) Tharp; two brothers, JW and Larry Tharp; two sisters, Peggy Rainey, Sherry Dunlap; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and numerous dear friends.
A service will be held in honor of Al’s life at Trahan Family Funeral Home on Friday, March 30, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. The family will be receiving guests at 10:30 a.m. Al will be laid to rest at Barrancas National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
