Obituary for Shannon Leslie Johnson

Shannon Leslie Johnson, the daughter of Michael and Linda (Van Maanen) Johnson was born on March 24, 1969 in North Kingston, Rhode Island at the Quonset Point Naval Air Station.

Shannon left us on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Santa Rosa Hospital in Milton, Florida. She was 49 years, 10 months and 16 days of age. She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Leroy and Mary Johnson; maternal grandfather, John Van Maanen and his wife Nadine; two aunts, Ruth Van Maanen and Margaret (Johnson) Chilcote; an uncle, Bernard Johnson; and two cousins, Kelly Brooks and Malahkaih Smith. Following Shannon's death, her maternal grandmother, Mary (Van Maanen) Brock passed away on February 11, 2019.

In addition to her parents, her family includes her daughter, Caitlyn Joy Johnson; two sisters,
Michelle (Richard) Wade and Tamara (Thomas) Nelson; three nieces, Alonna (Mark) Hitchcock, Kelsey Nelson and Jenna Wade; two nephews, Nolan (Cheyenne) Wade and Kyle Nelson; two great nephews, Dawson Hitchcock and Declan Wade and one great niece, Makenley Hitchcock. One other member of the family must be made mention of and that is her dog, Kirbe, whom she adored and called her “grandbaby”. All her life, her love of animals was a constant factor.

Shannon was an eye bank donor on her driver's license and the Lions Eye Institute successfully retrieved both eye corneas for transplant. It means a lot to us knowing that one or possibly two people will see again because she was a donor.

During her childhood, she lived in Rhode Island, Washington, California and Florida. Essentially, all four corners of the United States, as the Navy moved us around. She made many lasting friendships along the way. After high school graduation and while taking college classes, she went to work for WalMart and gave 28 years of service there before her heart surgery in December of 2016. She became friends with many co-workers whom she called her "WalMart family". Along with all her immediate family, we know that her relatives and friends will always remember her sweet smile, her warm hugs, her infectious laugh and her big loving heart! She will forever be missed but not forgotten!!

Because of Shannon's love for animals, we ask that in lieu of flowers or monetary contributions, you make a donation in Shannon's honor to either aspca.org (American Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals) or usvsd.com (United States Veterans Service Dogs).
