Obituary for Sandra Elaine Fredericks Delacruz
Sandra Elaine Fredericks Delacruz (”Mawz” to her grandkids and great-grandson), 78, of Gulf Breeze, FL, passed away peacefully with Heather and Richard by her side on July 7, 2019 at 2:30 pm. She was born in Columbus, OH on June 5, 1941 to Helen Shanks and Benjamin J. Fredericks.
When she was around 5 years old, her father was stationed in the Philippines and lived there for a few years before moving to Biloxi, MS. While attending Biloxi High School was a library assistant and a member of the National Honor Society. She went to Millsaps College for two years after graduating from Biloxi High School in 1959.
During her early adulthood she was involved in the Biloxi Little Theater and won an award for her performance in a comedy. When she was 23, she had a baby boy and her parents made her give him up for adoption. During her involvement with the Biloxi Little Theater, she met Chester A. Delacruz II. After being friends for a few years, they married on January 11, 1967. They had two children together, Heather Elaine Delacruz and Rachel Alicia Delacruz. They divorced on September 12, 1974. She was a devoted, hard working and loving mother. She worked many different jobs, sometimes having two jobs at a time, to support herself and her daughters. She was a head librarian in Jennings, LA, seamstress, teacher’s assistant at New Life Montessori School in Shreveport, LA, worked in medical records in Shreveport, LA and then in Pensacola, FL, was an office manager for her daughter and son-in-law, worked in a church office among many other jobs over the years. Her last few years she loved working in the office at Brit Ahm Messianic Synagogue.
Sandra loved G-d with all her heart. During her adulthood, she was always involved with the church she was attending, especially working with the children or youth ministry. For many years she worked with the Missionettes at Christian Center in Shreveport, LA. She moved to Pensacola, FL in 1994 to be with her family after her younger daughter passed away in 1993. Over the years she went to Methodist, Non-Denominational and Baptist churches until she became Messianic after finding her home at Brit Ahm Messianic Synagogue. She worked for years in their office up until she found out she had cancer in May 2019. Besides her love for G-d and her family, Rabbi Eric Tokajer and the rest of the congregation at Brit Ahm Messianic Synagogue meant so much to her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, ex-husband and then by her youngest child, Rachel Alicia Delacruz on July 22, 1993 when she passed away at the age of 20 due to leukemia.
She was survived by her two remaining children and their spouses, Heather Delacruz-Stevens and Richard Stevens and Douglas Welch and RoseMary Welch. She was so blessed and overjoyed when her first born, Douglas, found her in December 2017. She was survived by seven grandchildren, Brittany Stevens Burleson (James Burleson), Raymond Stevens, Alicia Stevens, Scott Stevens, Ali Welch, Abigail Welch Lee (Samuel Lee) and Madison Welch and one great-grandchild, Ryker Burleson.
We will miss her caring heart and witty sense of humor, but the fond memories will never be forgotten.
Sandra F. Delacruz, was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Pensacola, FL on July 11, 2019 at 2 pm with a beautiful graveside service delivered by Rabbi Eric Tokajer with many of her family and friends attending.
There will be a memorial service for her at Brit Ahm Messianic Synagogue, 6700 Spanish Trail, Pensacola, FL, on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, she requests that donations be made to Brit Ahm Messianic Synagogue’s Building or Torah Fund (www.shalompensacola.com/donations).
