Obituary for Laura J. "Jan" Robertson

Laura J. "Jan" Robertson
Laura “Jan” Robertson
1958 – 2016

Laura “Jan” Robertson, 57, of Milton, Florida passed away on November 22, 2016 with family by her side. She was born on December 1, 1958 to Howard and Dorothy Robertson in Pensacola, Florida.

Jan grew up in Pensacola, but spent more than 20 years living by the water and white sands of Pensacola Beach. For the past five years, Jan lived in Milton, FL to assist her mom, Dorothy, and to be closer to her niece and nephews.

Jan graduated from Pensacola High School, and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of West Florida. She was employed by Gulf Power for over 25 years where she was a hard worker and a friend to many. Jan, like most of her co-workers, had to work before, during and after the numerous hurricanes that visited Pensacola, and the surrounding beaches. Sometimes, Jan would work even though her own condominium at the beach had been damaged or destroyed by the storms. Jan volunteered her time to assist with organizations such as Toys for Tots, delivering food to needy families at Thanksgiving, and helping people that were devastated by the hurricanes or other disasters in the area.

Jan grew up attending Olive Baptist Church where she accepted the Lord as her Savior at an early age. She was baptized by the late Reverend Jeff Rousseau, but was also fond of the subsequent pastor, Jerry Passmore. Jan remained a member of Olive Baptist Church until she began attending Lakeview Baptist within the past decade.

Jan was a very kind, loving and caring person to all of her family members, extended relatives, co-workers, and special friends, many of whom she has been friends with since childhood. She was a wonderful daughter, an awesome big sister, sister in law, and a cherished aunt to her favorite nephews and niece. Jan was very intelligent, as displayed by her vast knowledge when watching Jeopardy with her mom and sister. She was a novice gardener, master chef, a very talented pianist and writer, a lover of music and movie trivia, and displayed a quick, sarcastic wit that rubbed off on her little sister. Jan was a loyal fan and booster to her favorite team, the Florida State Seminoles. She loved to display her loyalty to the Noles especially at work when surrounded by various Alabama fans, Auburn fans, and obnoxious Florida Gator fans.

Jan was a faithful Christian, and a wonderful example to her sister, friends, co-workers, and relatives. When she was twelve, the Lord blessed Jan with a little sister named Becky. Her life was never the same again. Jan took her role as a big sister very seriously, and ended up being not just a sister, but another positive role model and “mom” to Becky. As Jan would often say (usually while laughing), “I might treat you like a mom, but I'm not as strict, and I'm more hip and cool.” Jan took on extra responsibility when her father became ill, and was always reliable to her mom, dad and sister. Jan remained responsible and faithful to her family through the years while helping her mom and dad, letting her little sister tag along on various outings, and driving the family on numerous vacations.

Jan was a cordial host to friends and family that wanted to visit the beach, someone who needed a venue for a party, or anyone who just wanted to stay a few days in the sand and sun. Every year, especially during the spring and summertime, her place was filled with fun and beautiful memories, especially when her nephew and niece came to visit. The Blue Angels’ annual show at the beach was always a great time.

Like she had always been throughout her life, Jan remained a faithful and caring daughter and sister, and spent the past few years of her life assisting and watching after her mom. However, she never missed a chance to spend time with her sister, friends, extended family, and especially beloved nephews and niece.

Jan will never know how important she was to so many people, but she truly was a selfless and caring person to all who knew her. If you listen closely, you might hear her singing favorite hymns in her beautiful voice, or maybe yelling the Florida State fight song while watching football with her mom and dad in heaven.

Jan is predeceased by her parents and grandparents as well as other special relatives and extended family.

Jan is survived by her sister, Becky Colley; brother-in-law, Raymond Colley; her cherished nephew, Chase; niece, Madison and youngest nephew, Matthew Colley. She is also survived by many close relatives, cousins and friends.
