Wayne T. McKenzie
1933 - 2017
Wayne Taylor McKenzie, Sr., the son of Jesse Lurana Taylor and Benjamin Franklin McKenzie, was born in Occoquan, VA on June 7, 1933. He married Shirley Ann Edwards on July 26, 1960. He passed away on November 21, 2017.
Wayne attended school in Occoquan, Virginia, a little town near Woodbridge. Right after high school he enlisted in the Navy where he was a helicopter mechanic during the Korean war. He had worked many jobs in his young life including a mail man, a prison guard, and a gas station owner. He finally settled his career on being an aircraft mechanic, joined the Air Force Reserves and retired as a Senior Master Sergeant.
Wayne and Shirley moved their family from VA to Ocean Spring, MS in 1973. His last place of employment was at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS. There, as a civilian, he supervised the maintenance fabrication department for Air Force aircraft including C130s.
In 2005, after hurricane Katrina destroyed their home in MS, Wayne and Shirley moved to Pace, Florida.
Wayne was preceded in death by two brothers, Douglas McKenzie and Frank McKenzie and one sister, Mildred McKenzie Winfree.
He is survived by one brother, Richard McKenzie of Winston Salem, NC and one sister, Barbie McKenzie Lambert of Ormond Beach, FL.
He is also survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley; two sons, Wayne Taylor McKenzie, II and Donald Troy McKenzie; and two daughters, Pamela McKenzie Morgan and Beverly McKenzie Steelman; seven grandchildren including Joshua Wayne Thompson, whom they reared as their own and four great grandchildren.
Wayne loved spending time with family. He was a devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed.
